Question:Where is ATM technology commonly used and when should it be used?
Answer:ATM switches are also widely deployed in campus networks wherein it is used as a backbone technology instead of using the legacy infrastructures such as Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI etc. Few other examples could be at service provider's core.

But as a rule of the thumb, ATM should be implemented where there is a need for quality of service(QoS). In contrast, if your primary goal is to just interconnect high band-width endpoints then I'd say GigE(Gigabit ethernet) should be the choice.
